Dental Implants

Affinity Dental Kingsway – Edmonton &

At one time people accepted tooth loss as part of aging. They also expected that replacing the teeth meant wearing a plastic denture, or false teeth, which often left a lot to be desired for aesthetics, comfort and function. In some cases, especially with complete lower dentures, the denture would move around during function and speech, leaving the unfortunate wearer unable to have the looks, speech, and chewing ability that they had with natural teeth.

Today, modern dental health care has drastically reduced the number of people who will lose their teeth. And those people that are missing teeth are expecting more from any replacement. In many cases, dental implant therapy can help. The following questions are some of the most common we receive about this treatment. Please don’t hesitate to ask about your specific case requirements.

What types of implant restorations are available?

There are several options for clients without remaining natural teeth. They include:

  • implants with snaps for a denture to attach to
  • implants joined by a bar that the denture clips or snaps onto
  • implants joined by a precision bar that artificial porcelain teeth fit over
  • implants that the denture is screwed down onto & only removable by your dentist
  • implants with crowns and bridgework that is similar to natural teeth

The best option for you depends on the specifics of your case, and you may have several options. We can discuss the specifics of your case at your consultation appointment.

Do I have enough bone to place implants into?

The quantity and quality of bone in an area affect whether we can do implants. The dentist will take x-rays and measurements to determine this. Sometimes if there is not enough bone, we can do a graft to increase the amount available. In general, the longer it is after the natural teeth were removed, the less bone is present.

Are there special health limitations?

People who have uncontrolled diabetes or certain bone disorders are not good candidates for implants. But in general, most people have no problem with the treatment, regardless of age. We will often place you on vitamin supplements for a week or so, especially if grafting is involved. As with any dental treatment, clients who smoke tend to take longer to heal.

What is an implant made out of?

Dental implants are made from medical grade titanium or titanium alloy, the same material used in replacement hip joints. Bone fuses to titanium. Implants come in various sizes for different situations, but the size is essentially the same as a natural tooth root.

Is the procedure uncomfortable?

The procedure itself is done with regular freezing, just like a filling, so it is usually quite comfortable. After the implant is placed, a little swelling or discomfort is normal that evening, and we may prescribe you a simple pain reliever. You may have a few stitches in the gums at the site, which will drive your tongue crazy for the first day. But overall the procedure is usually much more comfortable than it was to remove the tooth in the first place.

Implant treatment is very rewarding and we enjoy providing this option for our clients. As always, we look forward to helping you and your family with your oral health care.

There are situations when bone or soft tissue has been lost from the face and jaws, whether it be from trauma, infection, or age. In some cases we need to replace these missing tissues to restore function and/or aesthetics. This process is referred to as grafting.

Just some of the many types of graft we perform include:

  • grafts to replace the gum tissue, when it has receded and exposed the tooth roots
  • bone grafts to replace the missing jaw when an accident has damaged it
  • grafting to the socket when teeth are extracted, to preserve the bone and facial contour
  • sinus lifts, where the sinus floor has grown down over time and we need to move it back up to place dental implants
  • gingival surgery where we move a band of thick, healthy gum tissue to the outside of the teeth.

WHAT MATERIAL IS USED FOR GRAFTING?

Every case is different, but we may use your own bone or gingiva (an autogenous graft) or use donor tissue from tissue banks, animal products, or synthetics, or even a combination of the above. The most common bone graft material we will use is freeze-dried mineralised bone aggregate, or MFDB. This is a product made from donor bone, where the cells and proteins are removed, essentially leaving the mineral. Your body will recognize this crystal structure and grow new bone around it, eventually replacing it with your own bone. This is a safe and effective way to help your body replace the missing tissue.

CAN I GET A DENTAL IMPLANT AT THE SAME TIME AS MY GRAFT?

Whenever possible, we like to combine treatments to save you a visit and have you restored to ideal health as soon as possible. In an ideal situation, we can remove a failing tooth, graft the site, place the implant, and place a temporary crown at the same visit. Your dentist will discuss the specifics of your treatment with you prior to your graft visit.

WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE THE SUCCESS OF MY GRAFT?

Probably more than anything else we do in dentistry, the success of your graft is dependent on how your body heals. A healthy diet and carefully following our instructions will definitely improve your chances. One of the biggest factors, though, is smoking. Smokers just don’t heal very well. If you require a graft of any kind and you smoke, now is a good time to talk to us about quitting.

Reconstructive grafting is an important part of modern general dentistry. If you require more information about these procedures, call for a consultation appointment today.

FINDING A SOLUTION BEGINS WITH INFORMATION

The most important thing you can do for your failing or missing teeth is to understand your condition. When you know your condition, you will know exactly what’s available for you to solve the problem.

At your consultation, you’ll meet with a patient education consultant (PEC), imaging technology expert, and a team of doctors. Our specialists will play a key role in 1) helping you understand your current dental condition; 2) developing a personalized treatment plan; and 3) delivering a fixed cost.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR DENTAL IMPLANT CONSULTATION

3-D CAT Scan

Your doctors will want a 3-D CAT scan of your mouth and jaws. The scan will produce a sophisticated three-dimensional and cross-sectional image X-ray of exactly what’s going on with your teeth, gums, and jawbones. Consider it the crystal ball for a better mouth.

Dental Implant Treatment Plan

Imagine walking into a test having been given the questions beforehand. Well, the 3-D CAT scan works the same way. With a clear understanding of your condition, the doctors are able to chart a tailored course of treatment that will permanently solve your oral problems.

Receive A Fixed Dental Implant Cost

Because the doctors will be able to develop a tailored treatment for you, they will also be able to provide you with an up-front, all-inclusive fixed cost. This way you’ll fully understand the investment you’re about to make.
